Talks and Tours

You may have heard of Aberlady.  You may have been fortunate enough to carry your clubs around the many links courses that grace our coasts; or watched in amazement as myriad geese tumble from the huge skies of the Bay area to their roosting grounds below; or just enjoyed the tranquility of the pastoral country scenes.

But do you know of the deep and rich history of this jewel of the Bay?  Let us take you back to the days of:

  • Gododdin Britons, and the heroic Dark Age era of immortalised warrior aristocrats and devout holy men.

  • To the days of mysterious Picts, Irish Scotti and invading pagan Angles.

  • To vivid illuminated artworks and their carvings in high sculpted crosses.

  • To pilgrimages to the great monastic houses of Iona and Lindisfarne.

  • To a time of multi-cultural fusion, culminating in the Golden Age of Northumbria, of which Aberlady was for centuries part.

  • To Aberlady’s days as a bustling medieval port, of smugglers and contraband.

The unique talks and guided tours provided by Aberlady Heritage have been enjoyed by organised groups for a number of years but 2010 is the first in which they have been actively promoted to our growing number of visitors.  See the brochure.

The itinerary consists of a presentation of about about 45 minutes from your tour guide, Ian Malcolm, followed by a 90 minute guided tour of the sites skirting beautiful Aberlady Bay.  These times are quite flexible however and it recommended that you set aside 2.5 hours - particularly when the seals are basking on the sandbanks!

Our tours generally take place during weekends but mid-week dates can be arranged.  We suggest a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 15 persons.  But, if you are a smaller group, let us know anyway as we may be able to include you.

Other guided tours for coach parties to the many nearby places of interest within East Lothian can also be provided...just ask!
